LANSING, Mich. — On Thursday, Chris Swanson announced his gubernatorial candidacy in Michigan’s 2026 general election. Since his announcement, reports have surfaced in the media that cast doubts on his support for reproductive freedom. The reports indicate Swanson previously held anti-abortion policy views. While Swanson’s campaign issued a brief statement declaring his support for reproductive freedom, the statement fell short of fully addressing the allegations.
Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan, ACLU of Michigan, and Reproductive Freedom for All Michigan released the following statement:
“As we would be for any gubernatorial candidate, we are deeply concerned about Chris Swanson’s past reported support for anti-abortion policy. Since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, Michiganders have made their stance on abortion rights undeniably clear. Voters turned out in record numbers to enshrine reproductive freedom into our state constitution, and they expect their leaders to uphold their values. With reproductive rights under attack at the federal level, Michigan leaders cannot waver on this issue.”
