Despite Harris loss, abortion remains legal in Michigan
LANSING, Mich. — The election of Donald Trump and the loss of Vice President Kamala Harris signal a difficult chapter for reproductive freedom across the United States. President-elect Trump is expected to attempt to further restrict access to abortion and other sexual and reproductive health services, escalating the ongoing public health crisis.
Planned Parenthood of Michigan remains committed to providing sexual and reproductive health care, including abortion, to the tens of thousands of Michiganders and out-of-state patients who rely on them for care, and Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan stands ready to fight back against every attack on reproductive freedom.
Statement from Paula Thornton Greear, President and CEO, Planned Parenthood of Michigan and Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan:
“When Trump-appointed U.S. Supreme Court justices overturned Roe v. Wade two years ago, Michiganders made their values clear by turning out in historic numbers to pass Proposal 3 and permanently enshrine abortion rights into our state constitution. Now we are facing the reality of a second Trump presidency and renewed threats to reproductive freedom nationwide — and I won’t lie: this loss hits hard.
“But everything we’re feeling now — rage, sadness, loss, fear — will fuel the next phase of our fight. Because the fight for reproductive freedom does not end here.
“No matter what lies ahead, we will be here fighting to ensure Planned Parenthood patients get the sexual and reproductive care they need, just like we always have. We will hold our ground and forge ahead, until everyone — regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, or income level — has the freedom to make the decisions that are best for their bodies, their lives, and their futures.”
Statement from Dr. Sarah Wallett, Chief Medical Operating Officer, Planned Parenthood of Michigan:
“No matter what comes next, Planned Parenthood of Michigan’s doors will stay open, and we will continue to do everything we can to provide safe and legal sexual and reproductive health care, including abortion, to every patient who needs it.
“Not once during Trump’s first presidency did we cease providing care. And when it became clear that Trump’s Supreme Court was poised to overturn federal abortion protections, I filed a lawsuit that stopped Michigan’s 1931 abortion ban from taking effect, ensuring my patients never had an interruption in their care.
“Since the fall of Roe v. Wade, Planned Parenthood of Michigan has expanded services statewide to meet our patients’ evolving needs, including adding appointment availability for the growing number of out-of-state patients traveling to Michigan for care — and we aren’t slowing down. Our staff remains committed to caring for everyone who comes through our doors, and whatever hurdles lie ahead, Planned Parenthood will be here to provide care, no matter what.”
