Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan is working in partnership with Kalamazoo College staff and students to continue their annual Abortion Monologues performance, modeled after the world-renowned play, The Vagina Monologues. This year’s focus is on the abortion stories that drive us to advocate for reproductive freedom. In preparation, we are building a cohort of storytellers who are willing to share their abortion experiences anonymously for students to read and transform into a beautiful theater performance on campus.
By sharing and exploring unique experiences, storytellers can amplify voices that are often marginalized, spark meaningful conversations, and create powerful artistic expressions. This collaborative environment encourages creativity, vulnerability, and connection, ultimately contributing to a broader dialogue about reproductive rights and personal autonomy. All experiences with abortion are welcome, and your name will remain anonymous.
What You’ll Learn:
How to write a story through the challenge, choice, outcome structure
The importance of the story of self, story of us, and story of now
Mindfulness and self-care practices while engaging in storytelling
Ethical storytelling
Moving others to action through empathy and your values
A time commitment of approximately 5 hours spread over the course of 10 weeks is required for members of this cohort. Meetings will take place every other week on Wednesdays from 6:00–7:00 p.m. (Exact dates are TBD.) The meetings will include training on storytelling, workshops to develop your own story, and story sharing. All meetings will be virtual.
After storytellers complete the training, they will finalize their written story, which will be shared with the actors who will transform your stories into monologues to be performed on stage.
