We're so excited to have you on our team! Can you introduce yourself to our supporters?
Hi everyone! My name is Dipita (she/her/hers). I am Bangladeshi; I was born in Bangladesh and raised in Banglatown—located in Detroit, Michigan. I am a recent graduate from the University of Michigan where I studied Gender and Health. I became passionate about reproductive health at an early age when I realized I was googling everything about my body- like “what is a period” instead of having reliable clinics/resources for me to go to! As a result, I started to learn more about my body and try to share any information I learn back to my community. I love to be adventurous and travel to new places whether it's different restaurants or countries, I am always interested in traveling and learning more!
What are you looking forward to working on as PPAM’s Civic Engagement Coordinator?
In this new role as PPAM’s Civic Engagement Coordinator, I look forward to networking with organizations and developing initiatives to create inclusive spaces to uplift and empower voices that typically are underrepresented. I am also looking forward to starting on projects to increase civic engagement rates in the BIPOC and younger communities.
Why is civic engagement critical to protecting reproductive rights and ensuring everyone has access to reproductive health care?
Civic engagement is critical to protecting reproductive rights because there are constantly policies being created and enacted by the governments regarding our health. It is pivotal to be aware of the policies, impacts of it, and knowing ways residents can shape/assist in these decisions. Unfortunately, a lot of these rules are being created without accurate representation, so by being civically engaged in different capacities, local community members can vote/advocate for accurate representation in these spaces by voting for representatives, voting for proposals, spreading awareness, etc.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Outside of work, I am challenging myself to engage in mindfulness and self-care activities. So, I am picking up reading again and have been loving young adult fiction! I enjoy watching TV shows with lots of drama like Bachelor (in Paradise) or shows similar to One Tree Hill and Empire! I am also practicing yoga. My goal is to do a split by the end of the year!
I also love to travel and explore! I have traveled to Spain, Cuba, Bangladesh (I was born there!). Outside of traveling, I love to explore new coffee shops or stores!
Do you have any special talents?
I’m really good at persuading people into doing something chaotic and challenging! For example, I convinced my friends to go skydiving!
