A statewide poll released by EPIC-MRA shows the fight for abortion rights will define Michigan’s November 2022 election, with voters showing a clear preference for candidates who will protect abortion access. This spells disaster for candidates like Tudor Dixon, Matt DePerno and Kristina Karamo who have staked out extreme anti-abortion positions.
Statement from Ashlea Phenicie, Director of Communications at Michigan Planned Parenthood Votes:
“All eyes are on Michigan’s November 2022 election; the outcome will determine whether Michiganders have the right to make their own personal health care decisions or be forced to travel hundreds of miles to receive essential care. Michigan voters understand what’s at stake and they’re not going to sit by while politicians like Tudor Dixon threaten to impose their extreme views on all of us, with absolutely no regard for our freedom or safety. Dixon’s support for a near-total abortion ban–with no exception for rape, incest, or the health of the patient–is completely out of step with the will of Michigan voters.”
Dixon’s dangerous record on abortion:
Dixon has argued that a pregnant 14-year-old survivor of incest is a “perfect example” of why she supports abortion bans, arguing that survivors “find healing” in being forced to continue the pregnancy and give birth against their will.
Dixon supports enforcement of Michigan’s 1931 abortion ban — one of the strictest in the country — calling it a “good law. Under this extreme ban, almost all abortions would be considered a felony. The ban has no exceptions for rape, incest of the health of the pregnant person.
Dixon celebrated the overturning of Roe v. Wade and spoke directly to Michiganders who will be forced to give birth against their will in a press release, saying: “You will find a way to do it all because you are strong, capable women. An unmatchable inner strength inside you will be unleashed the moment you hold that baby in your arms for the very first time.”
EPIC-MRA’s poll shows that Attorney General candidate Matt DePerno and Secretary of State candidate Kristina Karamo are also underwater with Michigan voters–likely as a result of their radical anti-abortion agendas.
DePerno has celebrated the U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning Roe, pledged to enforce Michigan’s 1931 criminal abortion ban, and argued that Griswold v. Connecticut–a landmark Supreme Court decision that protects birth control access–should be overturned as well.
Karamo’s anti-abortion agenda goes even further, comparing abortion to “satanic practice” and claiming that sexual relationships can transmit “demonic possession.”
