Our health and rights are on the line. With Roe v. Wade now overturned, the Michigan legislature could determine our rights to reproductive health care. It's critical that we elect leaders who will work to expand access to health care, not attack it. Learn more about where Michigan’s 13th State Senate District candidates stand on health care and reproductive rights before you turn in your ballot for the General Election on November 8.
Rosemary Bayer, Incumbent
Rosemary Bayer is seeking a second term in Michigan’s 13th senate district. Bayer is a strong supporter for reproductive rights, including abortion.
In the aftermath of the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe, Bayer said “Today, I grieve with the many folks who will be substantially affected by an inability to dictate the decision whether or not to have a family on their own terms. This ruling is not just about abortion. It will have wide-reaching impacts on the social, economic, mental, and physical health of those who can become pregnant. As it now stands in Michigan, we have a lot of work to do to address severe needs in our system…”
Bayer understands what is truly at stake for the lives of Michiganders and will continue to fight for the reproductive rights of Michiganders.
Bayer co-sponsored the Michigan Reproductive Health Act which would guarantee individuals’ freedom to make decisions about their own reproductive health, including the decision to end a pregnancy. Anti-abortion opponents have blocked the legislation from passing, but we have the opportunity to change the balance of power in the legislature on November 8. With champions like Brinks leading the way, we can protect and expand access to reproductive health care.
Jason Rhines, Challenger
Jason Rhines is endorsed by the extreme anti-abortion group, Michigan Right to Life. If given the chance, Rhines would vote to ban nearly all abortion in Michigan. In a candidate survey conducted in 2020, Rhines indicated that he supports the overturning of Roe v. Wade and would support defunding Planned Parenthood. Rhines also indicated that he supports legislation that would allow medical professionals to deny patients treatments and medications based on their personally held beliefs. Jason Rhines is a dangerous extremist who we cannot trust with our health and rights.
