Thank you, Representative Dillon!

Thank you, Representative Dillon!

A letter from the Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan board to Rep. Brandon Dillon.

There are two words that it is nearly impossible for most politicians to utter: “I’ve evolved.”

But that’s exactly what Sate Rep. Brandon Dillon (D-Grand Rapids) did last week when he publicly announced that he’d changed his perspective on a woman’s right to an abortion. Having run with the endorsement of anti-choice interest groups for most of his political career, Dillon has declined to seek those endorsements since 2012. In his editorial on on February 5, Dillon has this to say about his decision:

“I now firmly believe that the Supreme Court ruled correctly 42 years ago in Roe v. Wade,” he wrote. “Moving forward, I will continue to oppose any effort to undermine a woman’s right to make decisions about something so personal as their reproductive health care.”

Rep. Dillon said that his transformation came from talking to women and hearing their difficult stories. If only more elected officials would take the time to listen to the women of Michigan who struggle against enormous odds for access to safe, legal health care at times when they need it most. At Planned Parenthood, we understand that the decision is a profoundly complicated and personal one. No one – especially not politicians – should come between a woman, her family, her faith and her physician when it comes to deciding whether to have an abortion.

Roe v. Wade has been the law of the land for 42 years, yet it still takes courage for elected officials to publicly support a woman’s right to choose. It’s a shame that more politicians aren’t following the lead of Rep. Dillon and Congressman Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) and voting for the best interests of the women they serve, rather than for special interests who lend a deaf ear to the real lives of real women. As Rep. Dillon correctly stated, “Simply banning abortion has never stopped women from seeking them – it only makes it more dangerous for women.”

Rep. Dillon, on behalf of the women of Michigan, we thank you.
