Our Structure

PPAM is a fourfold entity made up of a 501c3, 501c4, and a SuperPAC that coexists to help us work on all levels of advocacy and activism in Michigan.

Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan – 501c4

Planned Parenthood Affiliates of Michigan – 501c3

Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan – PAC

MI Planned Parenthood Votes – SuperPAC

501(c)4

Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan, our advocacy arm, is a 501c4 nonprofit that works to protect and enhance the ability of the affiliates to deliver reproductive health care services by affecting policy makers through non-electoral lobbying activities. C4 work accounts for a majority of PPAM’s activities.

Direct Lobbying

Talking directly to elected and other “lobbyable” officials about supporting or opposing specific legislation.

Endorsements

Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan issues endorsements of candidates. Through a questionnaire process that goes to candidates at the state, county and local level, candidates receive endorsements in both primary and general elections

PPAM does not endorse federal candidates. That is handled through the federal Planned Parenthood Action Fund (PPAF).

Grassroots Lobbying

Encouraging our supporters or the general public to contact elected or other officials about supporting or opposing specific legislation.

Power Building

Activities in communities, with coalitions and with allies to build our supporter base, recruit and train volunteers, activists and leaders, and hold elected officials accountable on broad issues of women’s health and economic justice.

501(c)3

Planned Parenthood Affiliates of Michigan is a 501c3 nonprofit that works to protect and enhance the ability of affiliates to deliver comprehensive reproductive health services by educating supporters and the public and to affect public policy.

Issue Education

This includes conversations with legislators and administration officials about the business side of the work that Planned Parenthood does, not specific to legislative action. In addition, staff runs programs to educate and build support with specific constituencies such as the Health Center Advocacy Program (HCAP), campus organizing, teens and peer educators and other areas of youth leadership development.

Civic Engagement

Often done in conjunction with elections, though 100% separate from other electoral work, these activities encourage voters from underrepresented communities to participate in elections. Planned Parenthood is a trusted messenger and an impactful organization with these efforts.

Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan PAC

Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan Political Action Committee (PAC) focuses strictly on fundraising to support pro-choice political candidates.

Direct Support of Candidates

PAC checks are written to endorsed candidates’ campaign committees for them to use as they see fit.

PPAM-PAC does not give to leadership funds because those dollars may be redistributed and could end up supporting anti-choice candidates.

SuperPAC

MI Planned Parenthood Votes SuperPAC (state & federal) is an Independent Expenditure (IE) committee registered at the state and federal level that allows Planned Parenthood to do express advocacy on behalf of endorsed candidates. IE means that work is done without coordination with candidates.
