Prevention First Legislation Passes the Michigan House!
On Wednesday, March 24, the state House of Representatives ended ten years of inaction on proactive reproductive health policy by passing components of a common-sense Prevention First package of bills.
Your support of this legislation made this first major step possible. Because of you and other supporters like you, a bipartisan majority stood together to commit themselves to the health of Michigan's women and families.
These policies will save money and lead to healthier children and families. The package of bills that passed the House included legislation that:
- guarantees survivors of sexual assault have access to emergency contraception in the emergency room,
- requires "crisis pregnancy centers" to truthfully and accurately identify the services they do and do not provide, and
- ensures that factual information presented in sex education course material is age appropriate, medically accurate and objective.
The Prevention First package of legislation now heads over to the state Senate, and we'll have to work even harder to make sure these positive, proactive policies are made into law. But before we dig back in to fight for Michigan's women and families, take a moment to celebrate this important victory!
